Moai Head Sculpture

During Winter break in 2022, I bought three stone chisels after many days of research into what was best for a beginner like myself, I learned about different stones and what makes them better or worse for carving, limestone, marble, granite, and soapstone. Limestone was the winner for how soft it is, generally nontoxic. I did research online for stores local to Lexington to source stone from. I found a stone store that was going out of business so he let me take just about any piece that wasn't set to go to a job site. I grabbed a couple of thin marble sheets and a few small blocks of limestone, one of which I started to practice, using the chisels. one toothed chisel, one flat chisel, one pointed chisel. after getting the basics down, I learned quickly that you needed to use a metal mallet because rubber could not transfer the force into the stone enough. but after many days over many weeks, I carved out a moai head shown below, I used wooden blocks and hand sanded the cuts away into a smooth surface, I later submitted this to be shown in the Apple Higher Education commercial about UKY
